A trusted path to cyber protection? That’s Veeam. What improvements does it have?

Veeam Software, the leader in Data Protection and Ransomware Recovery, announced an update to Veeam Data Platform 23H2, featuring a new version of Veeam Backup & Replication™ v12.1. The announcement was made at the global VeeamON Resiliency Summit 2023 in October. Built on the principles of data security, data recovery and data freedom, the Veeam Data Platform 23H2 update includes more advanced data security, malware detection, automatic recovery and hybrid cloud features to keep businesses running in the face of increasing ransomware and other cyberattacks.

“Cybercriminals are getting smarter and are specifically targeting backups,” points out Danny Allan, CTO of Veeam. “The Veeam 2023 Ransomware Trends Report shows that 93% of ransomware attacks target backups, with 75% of those attacks being at least partially successful. Attackers target backups because if hackers manage to delete or encrypt backup data, the organization is more likely to pay the ransom.

IT and cybersecurity experts know that a critical part of a cyber resiliency strategy must be a trusted, clean backup that an organization can access anytime, anywhere. “Our Veeam Data Platform 23H2 upgrade will allow us to radically increase resiliency – not just to recover from a data failure or loss, but to move forward. By ensuring the shortest possible time between incident and recovery, our customers can keep their business up and running, evolving and moving forward,” explains Danny Allan.

As the world’s leading provider of data replication and protection software, Veeam innovates in data protection and recovery from ransomware attacks, delivering innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of modern businesses. The Veeam Data Platform 23H2 update includes new security and ransomware protection features for Veeam Backup & Replication™, Veeam ONE™ and Veeam Recovery Orchestrator solutions.

The new release brings more advanced data security, malware detection, automatic recovery, and hybrid cloud capabilities across the entire hybrid cloud environment. Veeam Backup & Replication v12.1, the foundation of the Veeam Data Platform, now further reduces incident response time with proactive threat scanning for backups, integration of SIEM platforms, as well as YARA tool rules for detecting ransomware patterns and guides to help customers implement NIST cybersecurity best practices. Organizations of all sizes can now radically strengthen their resilience by gaining complete assurance of protection, response, and recovery.

Many of the new cybersecurity features and enhancements in the Veeam Data Platform 23H2 update are designed to help all organizations prepare for security incidents and plan their next steps by connecting IT and security teams with the technology that will enable them to confront, contain and prevail against ransomware. These new cybersecurity features and enhancements include:

  • Detect and identify cyber threats: integrated AI-enabled malware detection performs inline analysis of entropy and file extensions with little impact on performance during backup, enabling instant detection. SIEM tools can report infections directly to the Veeam Incident API, which in response marks existing restore points as infected or triggers an out-of-band backup.
  • Faster response and recovery after ransomware attacks: Data recovery can be performed to the exact moment before infection with the I/O Anomaly Visualizer, which ensures minimal data loss thanks to Veeam’s continuous data protection (CDP) technology. It prevents re-infection by analyzing content with YARA and automating clean restores with malware-free restore points.
  • Secure and compliant data protection:
    Detect threats, identify risks and determine the security score of your environment with the new Veeam Threat Center;
    Ensure recovery success with automated scanning with Security & Compliance Analyzer;
    Prevent accidental or intentional malicious deletion or encryption of backups with advanced immutability support.

All of this includes the protection of the “four-eyes” backup model and immutable backups.

During his keynote presentation at the VeeamON Resiliency Summit, Danny Allan highlighted the new Veeam product releases for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, and also reminded the audience of the upcoming launch of Kasten K10 6.5. Veeam recently announced BaaS for Microsoft 365 and Azure, and a new version of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is planned for early 2024.

The new Veeam Cyber Secure program combines Veeam’s purpose-built technology with a team of experts to help customers protect and recover from ransomware attacks. The program, which will be available in early 2024, gives customers confidence that their Veeam solutions will be implemented to the highest security standards and assurance that they are prepared for a cyber incident.

The Cyber Secure Program includes incident recovery services such as: advanced onboarding, design and implementation assistance, and quarterly health checks. During a cyber incident, customers have access to a dedicated support manager and Ransomware Response team with response within 30 minutes per the service level agreement (SLA). The Veeam Cyber Secure Program also includes the Veeam Ransomware Recovery Guarantee, providing up to $5 million in data recovery costs. The Veeam Cyber Secure Program gives an organization the confidence and peace of mind that it will be prepared for the next cyber-attack by having clean, reliable backups ready for rapid recovery.
