We asked three Slovak companies about their comparison of cloud solutions and their own infrastructure.
Nowadays, it’s not so much an either/or question, but rather a way of complementing each other’s technologies. What is required is an effective collaboration of cloud services and in-house infrastructure. The benefits of having your own on-premise hardware for running applications and storing data are well known: fast response times, higher levels of security, lower storage costs for larger data volumes. The cloud significantly facilitates collaboration between colleagues in the home office era, enabling more flexible responses to business needs. It provides the required performance or storage space virtually instantly and removes the overhead associated with managing your own hardware. Greater stability and continuity for updates is ensured. The decision on which technology to use thus depends mainly on the requirements placed on the project. However, in the case of companies like Hydro Extrusion, which are part of multinational corporations, central IT teams with their own requirements and architectural decisions enter into the final solution. Our own hardware and local virtualized environment, managed in close cooperation with IT specialists from the region, allows us to flexibly test, develop, fully configure and deploy the solution without complex corporate bureaucracy.

The role of DITEC Commerce is to sell licenses of applications and solutions related to the computerization of companies developed by our parent company. At its inception in 2017, it was necessary to address the infrastructure for a web portal that will ensure convenient product purchasing and care for all clients. It was complicated and time-consuming to implement this in-house in the infrastructure of the parent company. Therefore, while looking for a solution to quickly provide HW for 24 x 7 operation along with backing up the e-shop system and data, we came to the conclusion that the only way to go was to use cloud services. When choosing a cloud provider, we focused on high security and availability of the service provided. We preferred a provider that has its solution located only in Slovakia. To begin with, we chose an IaaS service with reasonable initial virtual server parameters. E-shop – production system, set up for our needs by the supplier and according to our wishes. The whole solution was built in a short time and ready to sell our products. During the 4 years of use, no downtime occurred and we had no problems with the infrastructure and availability of the e-shop on the Internet. Simply: it is a fast and secure solution at an affordable price.

PLH Advanced Engineering SK is an established company providing advanced engineering services to a wide range of customers in order to offer them a competitive advantage in product development. We prioritise the highest level of research and development work for maximally optimised and innovated products for our customers. One of the specialist activities helping to achieve our goals is computational simulations using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Applications capable of performing these simulations are characterized by high demands on the equipment where they are installed and run. The hardware requirements of these software solutions are usually very high and, due to the variable complexity of the engineering tasks, heterogeneous. It is therefore not always cost-effective to invest in equipment covering all the performance requirements of the applications in question. Cloud solutions help us to perform advanced and hardware-intensive simulations, mainly due to the available flexibility and scalability of the cloud platform used, where we are able to solve even the most complex simulations. All this while maximizing the efficiency of the resources spent.
